UPC President Olara Otunnu
Uganda People’s Congress leader Olara Otunu has been summoned by Buganda Road Court to answer to charges of dishonoring police summons and libel to the effect that he defamed the person of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The Directorate of Public Prosecutions alleges that Otunnu committed the offences on the 16th of January, 2013 while addressing a press briefing at Uganda House in Kampala.
The DPP accuses Otunnu of uttering defamatory comments and statements in relation to the cause of death of the fallen Butaleja district Woman Mp Cerinah Nebanda.
In comments during the briefing, Otunnu allegedly defamed President Museveni by characterising his rule as violent, bloody and full of assassinations. It is alleged that Otunnu had assassinated his friends from as far back as the 1970s as leader of Front for National Salvation (Fronasa) rebel group.
Court documents also show that Otunnu refused to report to CID headquarters on the 28th of February, 2013 where he had been summoned by Deputy ASP Emmanuel Mbonimpa. The documents claim that Otunnu ignored the summons without reasonable cause though he had acknowledged receipt of the written summons a day before in a press briefing at Uganda House.
Grade one magistrate Araali Muhirwa signed the summons requiring Otunnu to appear on 23rd April, 2013 without fail as he was not in court today to plead to the above charges.
