The women whose identities police declined to reveal reportedly connived with an unidentified boda boda cyclist. They stoned MP Atiku as he was travelling from Arua town to his home in Awinidiri village, Oluko Sub County.
Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson for West Nile, says the three suspects have been arrested to help police with investigations. The women were arrested on Wednesday.
Angucia says that during the incident, one of the women called the MP by name, tricking him into stopping to respond. Angucia says the refusal by the women to name the boda boda cyclist they were with makes the police suspect they were behind the attack.
MP Atiku sustained injuries on his lips and back after he was stoned twice. Police say they have recovered the stones.
Police have preferred the charge of assault against the three but the Resident State Attorney has not yet sanctioned the file.
The suspects deny the charge. In their statement, they say they witnessed the incident but police confused them with the culprit. They insist they are innocent.
MP Atiku said he is making a good recovery from the attack but hopes the law will take its course against his attackers.
The MP says he was walking at the time of the attack because a friend had borrowed his official vehicle.
