Two senior players of the Uganda Cranes Hassan Wasswa and
goalkeeper Dennis Onyango have said they would prefer a foreign Coach to
be in-charge of the team.
Cranes captain Hassan Wasswa
The slot of the national Coach fell vacant last week after the
Federation of Uganda Football Associations-FUFA sacked Scotsman Robert
‘Bobby’ Williamson. As a result, FUFA said efforts were on to find a new
coach for the national team.
Dennis Onyango, the Cranes goal keeper says that despite the fact
that there are competent local coaches who can handle the national team,
theycannot cope with the politics and the fact that some senior players
may not give them all the respect.
He explained that most of the senior players know the strengths and
weaknesses of local coaches, which would create problems once they
appointed to handle the team. Onyango said the team needs a foreign
coach who is totally new, with new ideas and philosophy.
Former professional Wasswa who now features for local table leaders
KCCA FC told Uganda Radio Network on Monday morning, that although they
will seat back and who is appointed, he would prefer a foreign coach
because of their top quality approach in handling teams and players.
Wasswa said that he wouldn’t say local coaches are bad, but added
that a foreign coach would do better for the team because of their
philosophy. He however, declined to divulge further details on why he
would prefer a foreign coach.
Wasswa said that as players they are ready to work
with whichever Coach the Federation appoints. Onyango who plies his
trade with Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa also said he would prefer a
foreign Coach if they are ever to qualify for big tournaments like the
World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
Although several foreign coaches are targeting the Cranes job,
sources in the FA have said a local coach could be handed the job on a
temporary basis to see the team through the 2014 World Cup and CHAN
qualifiers where they play Tanzania in the first round.
Some of the local coaches eyeing the job include with Williamson
Jackson Mayanja and Fred Kajoba, both former assistants of Bobby
Williamson, and Sam Timbe and Sam Ssimbwa. The foreign coaches who have
their eyes on the Cranes job include; Nikola Kavazovic, Tom Sainfeit,
Guiseppe Dossena and Roger Palmgren. The FA is also targeting Zambia’s
Herve Renard and Rwanda’s Milutin Sredejovic.
