HAPPINESS SUDDENLY turned into sorrow when a makeshift stand collapsed onto spectators up and below it during the weekend Masaka rally at Misaali.
As the wounded fans were being rushed to Masaka Referral Hospital, upcoming driver, Patrick Ssebambulidde lost control of his speeding Mitsubishi due to the slippery road, running over four people. According to an eyewitness, the porch, constructed in 2009 had grown extremely weak and could no longer bear the weight of more than 50 people. The event organisers surprisingly didn’t notice this while preparing, leading to the catastrophe.
Among the affected were kids below ten years. Pepper Sport later established that among the four people knocked by the speeding car were two policemen and a middle-aged woman who was enjoying her nyama choma. Uganda Motorsport Federation offi cials could not readily point to the exact cause of the accident but pledgeded to teach rally fans safety measures.

Meanwhile, reigning national champion, Jas Mangat emerged winner yesterday after clocking 1:47:28 in the two-day rally. Ronald Ssebuguzi followed in second place, Duncan Mubiru third while newcomer Arthur Blick fi nished fourth. Ssebuguzi regretted the ugly incident and blamed his miss out on the slippery roads.
