Not even academic excellence can prepare you for motherhood challenges and adventure. However, with advice from family and friends, a first-time mother can make a great mother.
In celebration of  Mothers’ DayVicky Wandawa asked parents advice on what they should tell their daughters to make them good mothers.

Breastfeed your baby for at least a year so that it can get proper immunity. Do not forget your husband as many women do when they get babies. Let home be a place that your husband looks forward to coming back to. Create a conducive atmosphere in your home for the well-being of your children.

Befriend your children. By being friends with them, they will not fear to share anything with you, and in that way, you can show them the right way.

Talk to them respectfully. You could be blaming them for doing something, yet they may not know it is wrong.

Begin loving and praying for your child as soon as you realise that you have conceived, no matter the circumstances.

Start shopping for the baby as early as you can. Do not worry about the gender of your baby, love them because every child is a gift from God.

Prayer beats all odds in motherhood.

A good mother should be prayerful. If you pray, you will raise disciplined children and as they grow up, they, too, will desire to be just like you.

I told my daughter that if she wants to be a good mother, she should look back at how I brought her up

It is important to bring up children in a Godly way.

Pray for them, even before they are born.

You must love your children, but ensure that the love does not exceed the ability to correct them when in the wrong.

Secondly, teach them to fear God, because that is the beginning of wisdom. Teach them to respect elders and work hard.

You should also balance between time for them and time for work.

Forsake all selfish interests and put your children’s interests first. Children should take a fair share of the family’s budget, especially for their education.

As the mother, you should be their first female mentor and not the house help.

This means you should set aside a considerable amount of time to spend with them.
