President Yoweri Museveni has tasked members of the East Africa
Legislative Assembly-EALA to champion the sensitization of East African
citizens on the integration process. According to Museveni, many people
in the region are ignorant about the objectives and benefits of forming
the East African Community, which has slowed down its integration.
Museveni made the observation during his State of the EAC Address in a
special sitting of the East African Legislative Assembly in Kampala on
Wednesday. He tasked the EALA MPs to use their mandate in the East
African Community Treaty to preach economic and political
integration. Museveni also called upon EAC member states to participate
in the full implementation of the treaty by removing non tariff barriers
saying much of the powers still lie in the hands of member states.
He said the region is set to progress to prosperity after identifying
the bottlenecks that kept Africa backward for centuries like
electricity, poor infrastructure, ideological disorientation and lack of
industrialization. He revealed that EAC leaders are in the process of discussing the EAC
Infrastructure master plan to help in steering development in the
sectors of energy, industrialization and railways among others across
the region. He appealed to the partner states to utilize the oil and Gas
potential they have in the region to enhance economic integration.
