School strikes in Uganda have been rampant in the past few months
Students of St. Kizito S.S.S, Lorengedwat, in Nakapiripirit district are on strike protesting poor administration, feeding and a below par healthcare system in the school.
The rioting students destroyed school furniture, shattered window panes and beat up their colleagues who were against their decision.
The strike started on Wednesday August 7, teachers and their families have all fled the school into hiding after some were assaulted by the students.
Several students have been admitted at Lorengedwat Health Centre III with bruises.
Angelina Nachugae, an eyewitness, told this newspaper that they woke up from sleep at 5.00am to noise from the school.
She further said that the students were playing loud music, banging desks, metallic pans and breaking window panes to signal the start of their strike.
She went on and said that though Police was rushed to the scene, they were unable to calm the situation despite firing live bullets in the air.
Police had to fall back as students attempted to disarm them. Others who attempted to break into shops at Lorengedwat trading centre were restrained by spear wielding groups.
Godfrey Aluma, the Resident District Commissioner Nakapiripirit, confirmed the strike and said that it unfortunate.
He advised that the students should have contacted local leaders if the school authorities did not bother about their grievances.
“The perpetrators of the strike will be arrested and prosecuted and i appeal to parents to restrain their sons and daughters from such acts,” roared Godfrey Aluma
The students have vowed continue with the strike till the school administration meets their demands.
