Police raid security firm, arrest managers

Kampala- Police have raided the offices of a private security firm owned by the Kampala Resident City Commissioner, Mr Mpimbaza Hashaka, and arrested five managers over alleged illegal purchase of firearms.
A police source, who preferred anonymity because is not allowed to talk to the press, said Green Belt Services, a private security firm located in Mukono, had been buying rifles illegally.
It is alleged that police sent intelligence officers who posed as sellers of firearms to Green Belt Service officials after receiving reports that they were purchasing firearms illegally.
Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba confirmed the arrests.
Mr Hashaka yesterday confirmed knowledge of the purchase of the firearms and arrest of his managers but attributed it to business rivalry.
“I was informed that there was a security firm that was running out of business and wanted to sell its firearms. I told them to go ahead but must make sure that the firm exists and their guns are licensed,” Mr Hashaka said.
He said they entered into negotiations with the firm on the modalities of purchasing the firearms, insisting they were doing it legally.
