Police Chief General Kale Kayihura
Uganda’s Inspector General of Police General Kale Kayihura has called for the enactment of stringent laws if the the problem of drug trafficking is to be curtailed in the country.
General Kayihura made this call during the Uganda Police Force Senior Management retreat that opened on Wednesday in Kampala.
“The law is a big problem, to fight drug traffickers, the law is weak, some criminals even ask to be taken to court, when they appear in court they plead guilty and they are sentenced to a fine,” Gen. Kayihura said.
Currently, when one is found guilty of drug trafficking the punishment is either a fine of one million shillings or imprisonment for six months.
The retreat was opened by Internal Affairs Minister General Aronda Nyakairima who urged police officers to use the opportunities that prevail in the country to overcome the challenges they face.
“There are opportunities that we should exploit, and, do not miss out on to overcome [our] challenges, there is growing interest in the country as a destination of tourists, we can work on that to reduce unemployment,” Gen. Aronda said.
The retreat has brought together all the directors of Police, heads of departments, Regional Police Commanders, and heads of specialized units.
The retreat that is expected to end next Tuesday is supposed to evaluate the Police performance from an outsider’s view, management and Development of Human Resource with focus on the Police, improving the Corporate image of Police, the Force’s Strategic Policing Plan 2011/12-2016/17, welfare and Production in the Police, Family Welfare Schemes i.e. Medicare and Insurance, education of Police Staff children, home/family accommodation.Drive Hot
