Ugandan Prime Minister, Rt Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda will be the Chief Guest at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday as the Uganda Cranes take on Togo in an African Nations Cup Qualifier.
There had been confusion as to who would be chief guest tomorrow after the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA), in an unprecedented move announced that Kampala Minister, Frank Tumwebaze would be chief guest.
Football matches involving the national team at Namboole Stadium have of recent become a hot bed for political mobilization due to the fact that they attract Ugandans from all walks of life, who are believed to be a true representation of Ugandan society.
“Politicians hope that with their attendance, Ugandans will get the belief that they have the team at heart hence hope to win over the masses,” a political pundit said.
During the last Cranes game, fans turned up in their droves clad in T-shirts with messages for then Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi urging him to contest the presidency.
CRANES EYE VICTORY
Cranes will be eyeing a second home glory, after recording promising results in their two opening matches, holding Ghana to a 1-1 draw before dispatching Guinea 2-0 at home.
Preparations for this game got underway late last month during Nile Breweries-sponsored Cranes Na Mutima campaign, a countrywide tour for the national team intended to increase its popularity amongst Ugandans.
Cranes talismanic midfielder Tonny Mawejje says the the importance of Saturday’s 2015 Nations Cup qualifier against Togo is not lost on the players.
For Togo, defeat will practically end their campaign, which makes the game a make or break affair for them.
