Varsity student sentenced to 8-years imprisonment over child trafficking.Drive Hot News

KAMPALA
The International Crimes Division Court has sentenced a student of Cavendish University in Kampala to eight years in prison for aggravated child trafficking. Annet Umutoni who has been on remand for 20months since she was charged and denied the offence, was on Monday found guilty by Justice Ezekiel Muhanguzi and sentenced to Luzira Prison.
This was after prosecution proved that Ms Umutoni by means of abduction and deception transported and transferred a one, Mahirwe Angella 14years and another, Umubyeyi Phiona from Kicukiro Kigali Rwanda to Rwetobo in Ntungamo District and Kampala-Uganda for purposes of exploitation.
“Given the seriousness of the offence, this court cannot grant your prayer of a fine or a caution since none of the punishments were provided for in our law books for this particular offence,” said Justice Muhanguzi.
According to the judge, evidence also proved that Ms Umutoni in October 2011 while she had visited the home of the victims in Gahanga Rwanda convinced them that she would help them get jobs in supermarkets and escaped with them without the permission of their parents.
On reaching Uganda Umutoni instead made the victims to do house chores in various homes including hers, where they were not paid but sexually abused by the men in those homes.
Ms Umotoni a single parent of four children and a first year student of International relations at Cavendish University was first arrested in 2011 with similar charges but the case could not proceed because of the technicality which her lawyer termed as illegality of the court (by then the Attorney General consent was not sought)
