Tear Gas As Besigye, Lukwago Are Rearrested

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Rtd Colonel Kiiza Besigye and beleaguered Kampala city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who were Thursday afternoon released on a Shs40 million non cash bail by the Buganda Road Court in Uganda’s capital Kampala have been rearrested and taken to an unknown destination.
There are conflicting reports about where the the two opposition stalwarts were picked, however a source within FDC says they were re-arrested at Hotel Triangle, along Buganda Road in Kampala and taken to an unknown destination.
Police fired teargas to disperse supporters of the two.
The two who were being held in police custody at Kiira and Jinja road police stations respectively were produced before the Buganda Road Court and charged with managing and being members of an unlawful society (A4C and 4GC), with the prosecution’s case resting on activities they engaged in on July 19 2012 on Katonga Road.
The two who had spent two nights in police detention will reappear in court on 11th December 2013.
Lukwago and Besigye were picked up on Tuesday and taken to Nagalama police station and Central Police Station in Kampala respectively.
Lukwago was intercepted by police while leaving his home to appear at Kibuli Police headquarters while Besigye was picked up from Ben Kiwanuka street where he was greeting his supporters after beating tight security at his home in Kasangati, a Kampala suburb.
