Fire guts Kakira Sugar plantation.Drive Hot News

Police in Jinja are investigating circumstances under which Kakira Sugar plantation owned Madhvani group of Companies was on Tuesday evening gutted by fire.
According to Chief fire officer Mr, Rogers Turinawe, the fire which started at around 10:00pm on Tuesday burnts about 20 acres of the plantation into ashes.
“We were called in time but the fire was too much and we were overpowered,” said Mr Turinawe, adding that they (police) suspect the fire was caused by arsonists.
“But investigations have already started,” he added.
Meanwhile, government, representatives of Madhvani industries, local leaders and the land owners in Amuru have signed an agreement which paves way for using 40,000 hectares of land for a sugar cane plantation and factory.
The deal was signed on Tuesday at State House in Entebbe.
While officiating over the signing, President Yoweri Museveni regretted the delay in reaching a compromise over the land issue, which he says has impeded the potential benefits from accruing to the residents.
However, Kilak County MP Gilbert Olanya claims the land owners who witnessed the agreement were duped.
