Killings and hostage-takings from the Middle East to Nigeria and elsewhere must stop, he said in his annual Christmas "urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world) message.
Denouncing conflicts in Ukraine and Libya, and noting last week's deadly attack against a school in Pakistan, the pontiff also lamented the thousands of victims of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

Sudan has ordered two senior United Nations officials to leave, a UN staff member said Thursday, after a recent spike in tensions between Khartoum and the peacekeeping mission in Darfur.
The UN resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator Ali Zaatari and the UN Development Programme country director Yvonne Helle were asked by the government to leave, the UN staffer said on condition of anonymity.
"That's all we know at the moment," the source said, adding they did not know when the officials would have to leave.
It was also unclear why Zaatari and Helle were told to go, the source said, and the UNDP and Sudanese foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
Zaatari, a Jordanian national, had been in Sudan for nearly two years, and Helle, who is from the Netherlands, had spent about a year heading the UNDP's office in the country.
The expulsions come as Sudan's government is locked in a dispute with the hybrid UN-African union mission in Darfur.
Ties between the two have frayed over Khartoum's anger at UNAMID's attempts to investigate a report that government troops raped 200 women and girls in a village in the war-torn western region on October 31.
Sudan demanded UNAMID form an "exit strategy" from Darfur, where they have been deployed since 2007 and ordered it to shut a human rights office in Khartoum last month.
Zaatari and Helle's expulsion are the latest in a string of incidents with foreign aid and humanitarian workers in Sudan.
In April, the government told the American chief of the UN Population Fund in Sudan to leave for "interfering" in internal affairs.
The UN and international NGOs provide aid to some of the areas of Sudan worst affected by the conflicts wracking its peripheries.
The government is battling an insurgency in Blue Nile and South Kordofan, as well as a protracted conflict in Darfur.
Ethnic insurgents rebelled against Khartoum in 2003 complaining they were being marginalised, and in the intervening 11 years, the UN says some 300,000 people have been killed and two million displaced.Source Daily Nation.

If Your Guy Ever Does These 5 Things, Don’t Marry Him.Drive Hot News

There are warning signs, and then there are GET-THE-HECK-OUT-OF-THERE signs. These are the latter.
walk_1
I remember writing a story about Halle Berry in college that included a mention of her abusive marriage. “Leave smoke” running away, she said at the time recounting her mother’s advice on handling men who mistreat women. For whatever reason, that quote always stuck with me especially as I learned of friends dealing with unhealthy relationships. Back then, I wondered why they stayed. But as I got older I began to understand, especially when I became one of those women who stayed waaaay past a relationship’s expiration date. And like many other women, I made excuses and didn’t know when enough was enough. Over time and with the help of friends and family who’ve been through similar situations, I learned the major deal breakers to look out for. Yes, we’re talking MAJOR. Here are five red flags that give you the green light to walk away, even when you’re not 100 percent sure you’re doing the right thing. (Spoiler alert: You are.)
  1. He gets violent, even if he doesn’t hit you. You may think this is a no-brainer but honestly it isn’t. Most women I know who’ve been in abusive relationships have immense strength, only to shut down in the presence of her partner’s anger and violence. As a strong woman myself, I froze when a guy I’d been dating went into a rage one night, throwing things, damaging property and calling me names. I knew it was a deal-breaker because even though he didn’t put his hands on me, he scared me. No healthy relationship can be built off a foundation of fear because you never know when his actions may escalate.
  2. He cheats. Many people will say this point is debatable because lots of couples who have fidelity issues repair their relationship and end up in a better than where they were pre-cheating. But it’s not the act of cheating that’s the deal-breaker here; it’s the disrespect, broken trust and significant risk to your health. (Hello, STDs!) With all the risks that hang in the balance for just a tiny bit of pleasure, it’s entirely inconsiderate and selfish when a man cheats on you. Do you want someone who puts his wants before your needs, like security and trust? I don’t which is why I’ve said BYE to cheating men.
  3. He doesn’t claim or proclaim you. Many women will spend time in limbo-like relationships with guys who won’t give them the girlfriend title. Here’s the truth: If you’ve been dating a man for longer than six to nine months and he’s hasn’t made you an official part of his life, it’s time to MOVE ON. Stop making excuses for why things aren’t progressing to the next level; you’ll only waste time and your time is worth more than that. These days, I don’t settle for less because I don’t want a man who makes you a bargain-bin find. If he knows your worth, he’ll claim and proclaim you and there will be few conversations about how ‘he isn’t ready.’
  4. He suffers from addiction. There are plenty of honor badges to be earned by standing by your man when he’s fallen on hard times. But CAUTION if you stick with a man fighting demons, namely addiction. Addiction can range from less-severe, like cigarettes, to major issues such as drug, alcohol and sex. Someone who suffers from an addiction will do anything – and I mean anything – to get their fix, even at the expense of those they love. So unless you’d like to be second to whatever vices he has, it may be time to ‘leave smoke.’
  5. He gaslights you. We’ve spoken about gaslighting, which is the manipulative act of someone attempting to change your memory or perception of events in their favor, making you feel crazy or like you’ve forgotten something. But when is gaslighting a dealbreaker, you ask? The answer is when it happens! A man who resorts to manipulative tactics to have his way or ‘win’ an argument will continue to play mind games and be dishonest with you. When I experienced gaslighting in my relationships, I felt crazy and my self-esteem plummeted until I understood the game that was being played. Take advantage of the situation and leave immediately; it’s the best thing you can do for yourself.

The bill was first tabled by Ndorwa West MP David Bahati in 2009 and it has since become a centre of controversy with human rights activists calling it unnecessary and the donor community threatening to halt their aid to Uganda if parliament passed the bill.
Just yesterday, the MPs passed the Anti-pornography Bill, 2011, a piece of legislation that seeks among others to ban wearing of miniskirts and further clarify the offence of pornography in Uganda’s laws.
UGANDA’S ANTI-GAY BILL
October 14 2009, MP David Bahati tabled before Uganda’s parliament the now controversial Anti-homosexuality bill.

MP David Bahati
Even though the act is already illegal in the country, Bahati insisted there was need to further strengthen the law to ensure protection of the institution of the family in the country that still embraces conservatism.
The bill drew criticism from the international community especially the west with some powers threatening to cut aid to Uganda if it went ahead to pass the bill into law.
It was not surprising considering that majority of people in the west have now embraced the act of homosexuality.
Critics of the bill were concerned about the provision that calls for the death penalty and life imprisonment for ‘aggravated homosexuality’ thus the phrase ‘kill the gays’ bill.
It was this pressure that forced parliament to shelve the bill.
The clause which included the death penalty for some offences has been dropped.
However, it was resurrected in 2012 with the Speaker of Parliament promising to ensure it’s passed to serve as a Christmas gift for Ugandans. This did not happen as debate on the bill was deferred.
However, the bill has now been passed further criminalizing the act. What waits to be seen is how he west will react to Parliament’s move.Source Red Paper

The seat fell vacant after the historical impeachment on Wednesday, of Margaret Nantongo Zziwa who was accused of abuse of office, Incompetence and Disrespect.
Zziwa’s impeachment followed overwhelming support of the Motion for removal of the Speaker by 36 to 2 votes on the floor of the Assembly upon which the Clerk of Assembly declared the seat vacant.
Uganda, whose rotational term ends in 2017, was given up to 48 hours to present nominations for a replacement.
Initial reports indicated that four Ugandan representatives had picked nomination forms to vie for the post of speaker for the assembly. These Included Mike Kennedy Sebalu, Suzan Nakawuki, Chris Okumu Opoka and Daniel Kidega. CAIRNS, Australia
Australian police said Saturday they had arrested the mother of all but one of eight children reportedly stabbed to death in the northern city of Cairns, as vigils were held to mourn the tragedy.
Officers have not revealed the cause of death of the children, the youngest of which was a toddler and the oldest a teenager, but said knives were found at the house where the bodies were discovered on Friday morning.
"The 37-year-old mother of several of the children involved in this incident has been arrested for murder overnight and is currently under police guard at the Cairns Base Hospital," detective inspector Bruno Asnicar told reporters.
Flowers and teddy bears were laid near the crime scene and church services were held overnight in Cairns, where police said they are working closely with the Torres Strait Islander community to which the family belonged.
Police have confirmed the dead as four girls — aged two, 11, 12 and 14 and four boys aged five, six, eight and nine, but said they would not name the family for cultural reasons. In some indigenous cultures it is considered disrespectful to say a deceased person's name.
The woman arrested is the mother of the seven younger children and the aunt of the 14-year-old girl. She has not been charged, but Queensland Police said she was assisting them with their inquiries.
"She's stable and being looked after," Asnicar said, adding that the woman, who has stab wounds to her upper body, was "awake… lucid and speaking". He could not say whether her wounds were self-inflicted.
The murders have rocked Australia, which is still reeling from a dramatic siege in a central Sydney cafe this week that left two hostages and a gunman dead and prompted a huge outpouring of emotion.
"This is just an ordinary neighbourhood," Asnicar said. "A lot of good people, a lot of kids in the area and this is just something that has caught everybody by surprise. It's absolutely tragic."
'EVERYONE IS IN SHOCK'
A makeshift memorial has been established in a park near the crime scene, with scores of people visiting on Saturday to leave flowers, candles and toys in remembrance of the children.
Torres Shire Council Mayor Pedro Stephen told Australian Associated Press that the entire region was grieving.
"It's like a bomb has gone off," he said. "Everyone is in shock."
"There will be people who have never, ever been to Cairns who will be touched by this tragedy," added Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Taylor.
Queensland state minister Tim Nicholls, who laid a wreath at the site, said police had not yet explained the motive behind the killings.
"As a father myself with three children under 15, I can only imagine the grief this community is feeling as they come to grips with the events," he said.
The dead children were reportedly discovered by the mother's 20-year-old son when he arrived at the house in the Cairns suburb of Manoora on Friday morning.
Reports said a woman was heard screaming in the house on Thursday night, with Brisbane's Courier-Mail saying she had shouted: "Don't let them take away from us. God bless us. Forgive me for what I'll do."
A 13-year-old girl who walked a friend who lived in the house home on Thursday night said she had met the mother, who had given her money for a taxi ride home.
"She was saying stuff about God and other stuff," she told Australian Associated Press. "She said: 'Papa God gave me the power to do anything'."

Why female bosses are more prone to stress.Drive Hot News

Stress in the work environment is often associated with men, as women are easily able to talk or cry it over on a friend’s shoulder, while men are thought to suffer silently and alone.
However,  new research by American scientists, suggests otherwise, claiming that women in a position of authority, are more likely to display symptoms of stress than men.
Men on the other hand, said the study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behaviour, are able to decrease their depressive symptoms when positions where they have the power to hire and fire.
The scientists from Texas University interviewed 1, 300 male and 1,500 female graduates in 1993 and 2004 when they were aged 54 and 64 respectively.
They asked the participants about job authority, conscious difficulty in making critical decisions, how frequently they were monitored and days they felt depressed in the past week.
MORE PRESSURE
When the task to be accomplished included firing, influencing pay or making an important last resort decision, women in authority were found to have a nine per cent increased rate of depressive symptoms than men in authority.
Men with similar tasks had a 10 per cent  decreased rate of depressive symptoms.
The study further reported that female bosses were more frequently monitored by their advisers than men, felt more pressure to get the job done, and were less likely to fix concise job timelines compared to their male counterparts.
The study controlled other factors that could cause depression, such as hours worked weekly, their flexibility and how often the workers were checked by a supervisor, but lead researcher, Dr Tetyana Pudrovska found that though women in power were more professionally and academically qualified, they still had poor mental health than women in lower ranks.
Female bosses, added Dr Pudrovska, have had to deal with interpersonal tension, negative social interactions, stereotypes, prejudice, social isolation, as well as resistance and undermining from subordinates, colleagues and superiors.
Curiously, according to the study, when women adopted traditionally masculine behaviours as leaders, they were criticised for faking it by being unfeminine, yet colleagues would not believe the women were good leaders if they saw only their feminine characteristics.
According to Dr Pudrovska, female leadership needs to be made as natural as male leadership and companies should think about what they ought to do to help their workers manage stress.

SAN FRANCISCO
Robin Williams's death had people worldwide scouring the Internet for insights into the famed comic's life, making him the hottest search trend of the year on Google, the web giant said Tuesday.
"The passing of beloved comedian and actor Robin Williams shook the world, bringing many people online to search for more information and to remember, and putting Williams in the #1 spot on our global trends charts," said Google's vice president of search, Amit Singhal, in a blog post.
"There was even an uptick in searches related to depression tests and mental health in the days following his death."
Williams, known for high-energy, rapid-fire improvisation and clowning, was found dead on August 11 at his home in Marin County, north of San Francisco.
He hanged himself, according to coroners.
There were signs that the 63-year-old comic actor — who had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease — had tried to cut his left wrist, according to an autopsy report.
WORLD CUP FEVER
Williams, an Oscar-winner and veteran of movies, stand-up shows and hit television series, was one of Hollywood's most popular entertainers and his death triggered an outpouring of emotion the world over.
World Cup fever was the second hottest search trend at Google.
"The World Cup in Brazil had its fair share of unforgettable moments and had everyone glued to their TVs and mobile devices all summer," Google said.
"From Luis Suarez's bite heard around the world, to Tim Howard's superman performance vs. Belgium, to Germany's incredible run to their fourth title, the competition certainly lived up to its reputation and topped the charts."
The deadly Ebola virus and tragedy-struck Malaysia Airlines were the third and fourth fierce search topics, respectively, followed by the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge" fad of dousing oneself in icy water to raise money to battle Lou Gehrig's Disease.
TOP QUERY TREND
The remainder of the Top 10 search trends for this year were mobile game Flappy Bird, drag queen performer Conchita Wurst, the Islamic State group, hit animated film "Frozen" and the Sochi Olympics.
"It was a year in which we were struck by the death of a beloved comedian, and watched news unfold about a horrific plane crash and a terrifying disease," Singhal said.
"We were captivated by sporting events, and had our fun with birds, a bucket of ice and a frozen princess."
Apple's new iPhone 6 was the top consumer electronics gadget search trend, while "Hunger Games" film star Jennifer Lawrence was the top query trend focused on a person, according to Google.
Nude photos of the Oscar-winning actress and a trove of other stars were hacked and posted online in September, and several threatened to sue Google for failing to take down the leaks

Kenya women hockey champions Telkom Orange will sign new players to bolster their forward line up for next season.
Telkom won a record 17th league crown on Sunday after beating Strathmore Scorpions 3-2 on penalties in the women’s final after a 2-2 draw.
However, Orange coach Jos Openda says he is concerned by his team’s wastefulness noting that he needs to inject fresh blood in his forward line which includes Hellen Chemtai, Jackline Jow and Terry Juma all of whom are over 30 years.
Openda admitted that he was unhappy with his forwards whom he said almost cost his team the final.
“I expected much more from my forwards especially after our good performance at the Africa Club Championships in Zimbabwe. Our wastefulness almost cost us the title,” Openda said.
Orange’s top scorer this season was Jackline Jow who finished with seven goals, five less than Strathmore’s Gilly Okumu who finished top of the scoring charts despite missing the final due to an injury.
CREATIVE PLAYERS
“The important is that we won the league again but my main concern is our forward line where we will need to bring on board a few creative players for next season.” Openda added.
Though he did not mention names, Openda said most of their new players will come from the Telkom Young Rovers which is the team’s developmental side. He also did not rule out chances of signing players from other teams.
Last season Lillian Aura joined Orange from rivals Strathmore Scorpions and went on to win a double with the club in her first season.
