A Catholic Church leader in Lamwo district has committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree branch at the compound of another catechist.
40 year old Catechist Kenneth Olanya attached to Sacred Heart parish Madi Opei in Lamwo district used a binding wire to hang himself from an Acacia tree. He has been transported for burial in Pajong Village in Mucwini Sub County.
Charles Obong Okwera, the Madi Opei sub county chairperson, confirmed the incident on Wednesday morning. Okwera says the matter was brought to his attention by catechist Carla Achola. Olanya hung himself in Achola’s compound on Tuesday night during the evening downpour.
Residents told security in Madi Opei Sub County that the deceased heavily involved himself in drinking alcohol at Madi Opei trading center on Tuesday evening. His neighbours said he later engaged his expectant wife in a domestic quarrel after he returned home.
Olanya leaves behind a pregnant wife who had been admitted to Kitgum hospital to go into labour before he summoned her back home.
Okwera says Police at the sub county has collected exhibits from the scene of the crime to help in investigating circumstances surrounding the death of the clergy. He quickly warned residents against revenge attacks saying preliminary security findings have ruled out foul play.
Several suicide cases have been recorded in northern Uganda since the end of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict in the region. Many have been linked to sexual and gender based violence or traumatic past experiences of the war.
