Uganda’s 2012 Olympic gold medalist Steven Kiprotich is in the United
Kingdom ahead of the London Marathon which takes place this Sunday.
After the bomb blasts that claimed three lives during the Boston Marathon on Monday, there were fears that the gold medalist would miss the event. But Godfrey Nuwagaba, one of Kiprotich’s managers, says the athlete travelled to London on Monday night ready for the Marathon where he expects to perform well.
Nuwagaba is buoyant, saying that the prisons officer is highly motivated and nothing will stop him from taking part in the London Marathon.
Organizers of the London Marathon have been contacting top athletes around the world to re-confirm their participation in fear that they could withdraw after the Boston bombings. Nuwagaba said since Kiprotich has been training hard in Kenya, they expect another top finish.
During the Olympics last year, Kiprotich shot to the front with six kilometres remaining to win the men’s Olympic marathon in two hours eight minutes 11 seconds.
It was his country’s first medal of the Games in 40 years and came in the final event of the athletics program. Twice world gold medalist Abel Kirui was second ahead of compatriot and London marathon champion Wilson Kipsang. The two are also expected to compete in the London Marathon.
