Tension has rocked residents of Kayikiti Zone in Nyendo/Ssenyange division in Masaka District after an expectant mother accidentally delivered a baby into a pit latrine.
The incident occurred at one Hajat Safina’s home where a 23 year old granddaughter indentified as Zaina Kagere visited the latrine but unexpectedly delivered a baby girl who ended up falling deep in the latrine.
According to Hajat Safina, her granddaughter who is battling mental complications was allegedly raped by a man only identified as Kakembo a resident of Kibinge in Bukomansimbi district.
None of them knew that the baby was due and no precaution was taken to help the mother until she was seen bleeding while at the same time baby cries were being heard from the latrine. This is her first child.
Community members backed up by police swiftly dug the pit and fortunately retrieved the baby alive.  The two were then rushed to Masaka Regional Referral hospital for medical attention.
Dr. Florence Tugumisirize the medical superintendent of Masaka referral hospital said that the minor and her mother are responding to the medication and are now in a good condition.
