Beware of those well-concealed charges as you choose a bank.Drive Hot News

If you regularly pay the correct amount, you will never have any outstanding interest. Most of the people who complain about too much interest on a bank loan will usually have missed some payments, or even under paid in some months. PHOTO | FILE

As banks declare super normal profits for a year that saw the whole economy struggle, consumers are becoming more aware that this performance may be driven by hidden charges and high interest rates.
And with an average middle aged Kenyan operating more than one bank account, a Savings and Credit Co-operative (Sacco) account and a mobile money account, mobility has become much easier.
The 2016 household survey conducted by Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) estimates that with 18 per cent of the population using new mobile banking services such as M-Shwari and KCB M-Pesa, the proportion of bank account users has now risen to 38 per cent,   a 10 per cent  increase since 2013.
For a long time, banks have been fleecing borrowers with little or no information on how expensive the money they are borrowing is.
Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge has been urging Kenyans not to feel “trapped” by their banking institutions and should use the information provided by the regulator to make wise choices when selecting bank products.
“Our view is still the same, commercial banks need to lower their rates in a proportionate way. This is where people need to vote with their feet, I mean why do you feel trapped? If you think it is a high rate why not move to another bank, vote with your wallet,” he said during a press conference at the end of last year.
The CBK boss added that customers should also exit banks that offer poor services instead of complaining all the time.

Aedes aegypti mosquito

South Korea has confirmed its first case of the Zika virus, in a man who had recently returned from Brazil.
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention said the 43-year-old was diagnosed on Tuesday and was being treated in Gwangju city.
Zika, a mosquito-borne virus, has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
It has spread rapidly in Brazil and the Americas, and is suspected of causing birth defects.
But WHO experts caution the link between the virus and microcephaly - in which babies are born with underdeveloped heads - is not yet proven.
Isolated Zika infections have been reported in a handful of countries in Asia.
South Korea said the infected man had been quarantined and his movements tracked since returning home, according to the Yonhap news agency.

Taiwan earthquake: Man rescued but scores are missing.Drive Hot News

Rescuers carry a male survivor out from a building that collapsed, due to an earthquake, in Tainan, Southern Taiwan, in this February 7, 2016 still image taken from video.

Rescuers pulled 20-year-old Huang Kuang-wei out alive after more than a day

The 17 storeys of the Weiguan Jinlong (Golden Dragon) apartment complex, home to at least 256 people, crumpled down on each other as the quake took hold just before 04:00 (20:00 GMT on Friday).
More than 200 people were rescued, but a baby, young girl and two adult men were among 12 in the complex who did not survive, officials said. Elsewhere in the city, at least two other victims were killed by falling debris.
Hundreds of soldiers have joined in the rescue effort, with the help of hi-tech equipment and rescue dogs, and shelters are due to be set up for those who have lost their homes in the city of two million people.
More than 24 hours after the earthquake, fire fighters, police, soldiers and volunteers were picking through the ruins, some using their hands.
A woman surnamed Chang said she was waiting to hear from her daughter, who lived on the fifth floor of the fallen apartment block.
"She's not answering my phone calls. I am trying to hold my emotions and stay strong. I'll do that until I find her," she said.
"I know they will find her, but I have also prepared for the worst," she added.
A man in his 60s, whose son escaped and whose daughter-in-law was in serious condition, was trying to help rescuers pinpoint his 11- and 12-year-old grandsons.
Interior Minister Chen Wei-jen said investigators would examine whether the building's construction met requirements.

Cairo restaurant firebomb attack kills 16.Brought to u by Prince Media Uganda,Ugandan based documentary comapny

Members of the Egyptian security stand guard in the restaurant that was attacked near Cairo, Egypt, 04 December 2015
Sixteen people have been killed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after firebombs were thrown into a restaurant, officials say.
The attack happened in the Agouza area, in the city centre.
Egypt's interior ministry said it appeared to have followed a row between workers and others at the venue, which also housed a nightclub.
Media reports say three masked men threw the devices into the venue before fleeing.
Reuters news agency said the restaurant was in the basement of the building, making it harder for people to escape.
Video from the scene showed thick, grey smoke billowing out of a doorway at street-level as passers-by tried to get close. Flames could be seen inside the entrance, as one man used a fire-extinguisher to try to tackle the blaze.
The victims died from burns or the effects of inhaling smoke, it said. At least five other people were injured.
Cairo has previously been rocked by a series of attacks on security forces and civilians carried out by suspected Islamist militants.
An Islamist insurgency intensified in the wake of the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Ex-girlfriend sues Charlie Sheen over HIV status. This news is powered by Prince Media Uganda,Ugandan based documentary company

A former girlfriend of Charlie Sheen on Thursday sued the actor for assault, negligence and emotional distress, saying they had sex at least five times before he revealed he was HIV-positive. PHOTO | FILE

A former girlfriend of Charlie Sheen on Thursday sued the actor for assault, negligence and emotional distress, saying they had sex at least five times before he revealed he was HIV-positive.
Scottine Ross, 26, who said she met Sheen while she was working as a porn actress and later became engaged to him, also claimed the actor forced her to have an abortion after she became pregnant in 2014, and had kicked and choked her on numerous occasions during their one-year relationship.
The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court, is the first known legal action against Sheen since he revealed in a TV interview in November that he had been diagnosed HIV-positive four years ago.
The former star of TV comedy "Two and a Half Men," 50, said at the time he had decided to speak out because he had paid some $10 million to people for their silence.
Sheen, who is three times divorced and has dated many porn stars, also said it was "impossible" that he had transmitted the virus to anyone else. He said he "always led with condoms and honesty when it came to my condition."
His attorney, Martin Singer, said on Thursday that Sheen plans to "vigorously defend the lawsuit filed by Scottine Ross. We are confident that Mr. Sheen will prevail in this action."
PAID TO HAVE SEX
Ross' lawsuit said she first met Sheen in November 2013, when he paid $10,000 to have sex with her. The couple had sex at least five times before Ross discovered his medications for the treatment of HIV, she said. The couple later fell in love and had
unprotected sex "like a normal couple."
Ross alleged several violent outbursts during their relationship, including being kicked, punched, put in a chokehold and having an unloaded gun pointed at her.
She is seeking an unspecified amount of damages.
Sheen said in November that he had been blackmailed for years by people threatening to disclose his HIV status. He also appeared resigned to a stream of new lawsuits.
Under California's criminal statute, a person who knowingly exposes another to HIV through unprotected sex must be proved to have had a deliberate intent to infect them.
The law means that criminal prosecutions are rare but civil cases can be brought on a range of grounds, including alleged negligence, emotional distress or sexual battery.

Mutant mosquitoes 'resist malaria'.Drive Hot News

mosquito
US scientists say they have bred a genetically modified (GM) mosquito that can resist malaria infection.
If the lab technique works in the field, it could offer a new way of stopping the biting insects from spreading malaria to humans, they say.
The scientists put a new "resistance" gene into the mosquito's own DNA, using a gene editing method called Crispr.

n theory, if these mosquitoes bite people, they should not be able to pass on the parasite that causes malaria.
About 3.2bn people - almost half of the world's population - are at risk of malaria.
Bed nets, insecticides and repellents can help stop the insects biting and drugs can be given to anyone who catches the infection, but the disease still kills around 580,000 people a year.

'Pivotal role'

Scientists have been searching for new ways to fight malaria.
The University of California team believe their GM mosquito could play a pivotal role - breeding resistant offspring to replace endemic, malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
They took a type of mosquito found in India - Anopheles stephensi - on which to experiment.
Dr Anthony James and his team showed that they could give the insect new DNA code to make it a poor host for the malaria parasite.
The DNA, which codes for antibodies that combat the parasite, was inherited by almost 100% of the mosquito offspring and across three generations.

Egypt plane crash: Easyjet cancels more Sharm el-Sheikh flights.Drive Hot News

Empty arrivals hall at Sharm el-Sheikh airport

Easyjet has now cancelled all flights between the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and the UK until 6 January.
The airline, along with other carriers, had cancelled all outbound flights to Sharm el-Sheikh up to this week.
Easyjet said the latest move was to provide some certainty to passengers travelling over the Christmas period.
Flights were halted after the UK government said the Sinai plane crash, which killed 224 people on 31 October, may have been caused by a bomb.
Easyjet said customers on affected flights could go to another destination, receive a full refund or get a flight voucher for future travel.
People wanting to travel back to the UK have been asked to contact the airline's customer service team.
"We are sorry for the inconvenience this will obviously cause, but we hope that being clear with all our customers at this point helps you to manage your plans with more certainty.
"The situation is beyond our control and passenger safety will always be our number one priority."
Last week British Airways announced that outbound flights from the UK to Sharm el-Sheikh would be cancelled until 17 December.
The airline said it would keep the situation under review and give customers as much notice as possible.

At least 4 killed in latest violence in Burundi's capital.Drive Hot News

BUJUMBURA, Burundi (AP) -- At least four people were killed in overnight violence in the Burundi capital, the police said Sunday as sporadic gunfire and loud explosions continued to echo across the city.
A local human rights activist, however, said up to seven dead bodies had been discovered and blamed the police for the killings.
Bujumbura has been wracked by violence since April when the president announced he would seek a third term, sparking violent street clashes and a failed coup attempt.
Opponents and supporters of the president appear to be targeting each other in revenge attacks, raising fears of a possible return to civil war.
Deputy Police Spokesman Moise Nkurunziza said that three of the victims died in the northern neighborhood of Ngagara, while a fourth was killed in the southern neighborhood of Kanyosha. At least 28 people were arrested overnight, he said.
But Anschaire Nikoyagize, the president of the Burundian League for Human Rights, told The Associated Press that seven people had been killed overnight in confrontations with the police, with some tortured and beheaded.
"Relatives of the victims told us those who were killed were thought to be connected to people opposing (the president's) third term," Nikoyagize said, adding that shootings and explosions were still going on in Bujumbura Sunday afternoon.
A military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to a reporter, said there was an explosion inside the water and electricity company.
The U.N. has cited at least 240 deaths since April, but the real toll is likely much higher.
Burundi also has a history of deadly conflicts between the country's Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups.
Nkurunziza took power in 2005 near the end of a civil war in which some 300,000 people were killed between 1993 and 2006.

Think you should keep your husband’s name when you divorce?Drive Hot News

Thelma and I met recently at our doctor’s waiting room – it was the first time I’d seen her after we left secondary school all those decades ago. Deep in the excitement of catching up on those lost years, the receptionist called out brightly: “Mrs. Johnson?” Thelma was on her feet without hesitation, even though she’d confessed to me earlier she’d been divorced longer than she could remember. As she left the consulting room, we arranged to meet up and exchanged numbers. I really don’t look forward to these “do you remember when” moments and seldom hook up with past acquaintances
I meet up casually but was please when Thelma got in touch, she was having a little get-together at her place and invited me over. I was glad to take up her offer.
It was definitely nice being friends again and when next we met over ‘buka’ lunch, she wanted to know how easy it was for me to transit from my maiden name to my married name only to go back to my maiden name. She didn’t wait for an answer. “When my husband and I split up in 1998, after almost 25 years together, I kept his name for practical reasons,” she told me. “During our married life, I had become reasonably well known as an actress and it seemed professional suicide to revert to my original name, a name nobody recognised. So, against my feminist principles, I had little choice but to stay with a surname that bore absolutely no relation to my status or lifestyle. I was, and would remain, a single woman stuck with a married name, even though I called myself Miss on official documents.
“When the children were little, it made things neat and easy for us all to have the same surname, especially when travelling as a family. Now they’re fully grown and doing well in their chosen professions and my sacrifice seems to have been worth it. You watch all these border security series on the TV of women being stopped at airports because they have a different surname to their children and have had to explain at great length that they really are their mothers. Border officials are, of course, worried about trafficking, but for many women these days, it is an unforeseen consequence of hanging on to your maiden name.
“When I got married in the early seventies, I thought it was a legal requirement for women to take their husband’s surname. It was only much later I learned it was merely a custom and never enshrined in law. But at the time, women who kept their own names were virtually non-existent and considered odd. Didn’t they want to be married? When I got married all those years ago, 1 had not chalked up any achievements whatsoever, so it seemed 1 had nothing to lose by taking my husband’s name for all purposes. Little did 1 know my career would blossom to the point that 1 would bitterly regret not hanging onto my own name, at least professionally.”
These days, it’s common for women to revert to their maiden names on divorce, shaking off the one associated with an ex. Yet some hang onto their ex’s name for years. Sinatu, 45 and a medical doctor stuck to her ex’s name for eight years and only changed to her current name when she remarried. “I stuck with my ex husband’s surname because my two daughters, who were in  secondary school then, felt strongly about it. Now that they’re grown up and doing their own thing, they don’t seem to care.
“I thought briefly of changing to my maiden name when my ex remarried, which meant there would be two of us hanging on to his surname; leading to a sort of identity crisis! He didn’t seem to care but I was fortunate to meet my current husband. My ex doesn’t really get along with him and it would be  nasty of me to combine two married names – afteralI, I wouldn’t have been the first to     ~have done that!”
“Some of my divorce friends have reverted to their maiden names though a few still cling to the surnames of their ex. One or two have stuck to their maiden names even after they remarried – especially when they’re second or third wives!” said Thelma. “Some boyfriends I’ve had since my divorce have said they feel awkward about me still being called by my married name and would prefer to think of me as a Miss – untainted by carrying a long-ago ex’s name. I once thought fleetingly of changing to my maiden name. I had a go at a signature I haven’t used for over 40 years and it felt as if 1 was using an alias – as if that person is not me any more …. “
Coping With The Mixed Feelings In Your Relationship
Both of you have now given away greater and greater chunks of your life rewriting label on your time from “mine” to ours. It’s the beginning of commitment. If this becomes a crisis in your romance, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the romance was wrong, you can have the right romance, feel deep love and commitment yet find yourself in a stage that is paralysing. The opposite is true too. Just because the two of you have no doubts does not necessarily mean that you’ve chosen right.
Poorly matched, ill-suited and immature couples can find it as easy to leap into marriage as two people who’ve learned to love and accept each other. The crisis of commitment is likely to be a reflection of your true feelings about marriage itself rather than about your partner. If you don’t have at least some mixed feelings about marriage, you have appreciated its realities. The fear of commitment is often the fear of losing control of your life. Suddenly, the autonomy of being single looks attractive.
A bad first marriage – a bitter divorce battle, poor relationship or images of either parent can all make people fight shy of commitment. According to Judith Sills, a relationship expert, there are three different options for coping with a partner’s fear of commitment.
Don’t take no for an answer: A bold strategy will only work if love, which is strong can be seen as separate from ability to make a commitment. The partner pursuing need to remember not to take reaction personally.
Convince, don’t insist: In order to convince, you need to feel what you have is worth fighting for. The man or woman resisting commitment needs endless reassurance and persuasion.
Give an ultimatum: The classic “take control” approach to a relationship is bogged down on the road to marriage, “marry me, or I’m leaving,” is a high risk approach. If you say it, you must have to be prepared to leave – when your bluff is called.
Finally, when you do marry, keep one important myth at mind. Marriage is not an end point. It is a beginning. Your happiness does not depend entirely on your choice of partner life. Rest mainly on what you and your partner create. Like the relief of appreciating that much of the pain involved in forming a relationship is not meant personally, so it helps to know that much of the joy of marriage is also subject to your own influence.
