Government closes stations over fake fuel.Drive Hot News

Kampala- More than 20 fuel stations across the country have been closed down for suspected smuggling and selling adulterated fuel.
The Rev Frank Tukwasibwe, the commissioner for petroleum supply at the Ministry of Energy, said the closed fuel stations had been smuggling adulterated fuel into the country and selling it to motorists.
“We carried out a survey and found that they had not paid any taxes. This means that they have been smuggling the fuel into the country,” the Rev Tukwasibwe said.
“Some of them were mixing kerosene with other substances and selling it as fuel while others had smuggled fuel because nothing showed they had paid taxes.”
He said the Ministry of Energy issued a statement informing fuel dealers in the country about a survey to test the standards of the fuel. “Every fuel dealer is aware of the warning, we told them that those whose fuel fails to comply with the set standards would be closed and made public,” said the Rev Tukwasibwe.
The Uganda Revenue Authority officials declined to reveal the amount of taxes the closed stations had evaded. They insisted the matter was confidential.
The Rev Tukwasibwe said Fuelex Company, whose outlets were all closed, would be required to apply for a fresh licence to resume operations.
The fuel stations belong to various companies
In 2009, the government set up the Fuel Marking and Quality Monitoring Programme to check fuel adulteration.
Last month, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards Executive Director, Mr Ben Manyindo, said all imported fuel products for the Ugandan market are marked with a special colour chemical at the customs entry point into the country to distinguish them from uncertified fuel.
